Who This Tool Is For

Cloud engineers and finance teams at companies that have been on AWS for 12+ months and are still paying full On-Demand rates. If your EC2 and RDS bills are substantial but you've never committed to Savings Plans, this calculator will likely convince you it's time.

Why We Built This Tool

AWS's Savings Plans page explains *how* they work, but it doesn't show the dollar impact for *your* specific spend mix. Most finance teams get nervous about a multi-year commitment without seeing exact ROI first. This calculator removes the guesswork. You input your EC2 and RDS spend, and we show you the side-by-side comparison: On-Demand vs. 1-year SP vs. 3-year SP. Real numbers, no surprises.

What Problem It Solves

  • Commitment anxiety. Savings Plans lock you in for 1–3 years. Without seeing the exact ROI, it feels risky. This shows the payoff in dollars.
  • Missing context. AWS calculator gives percentages; this gives you annual savings amounts in your specific pricing tier.
  • Opportunity cost. Not all commitments are equal. 1-year plans are less aggressive. This shows both, side by side.
  • Finance approval blockers. CFOs want numbers before sign-off. This gives you a defensible estimate to justify the commitment.

  2. Enter your RDS monthly spend. Include all RDS databases and multi-AZ costs, if applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What discount rates does this calculator use?

1-year EC2: 38%, 3-year EC2: 60%. 1-year RDS: 35%, 3-year RDS: 55%. These are average rates; actual rates vary by instance family, region, and purchase option. AWS's pricing page always has the current rates. For a precise estimate tailored to your specific instances, book a consultation.

What about Reserved Instances? Are they better than Savings Plans?

Savings Plans are more flexible than Reserved Instances—they work across instance families. RIs give you slightly higher discounts but lock you into specific instance types. For most teams, Savings Plans are the better choice. If you want a detailed comparison for your workload, ask our team during a consultation.

Can I use Savings Plans if my workload is unpredictable?

Yes, but with caveats. Savings Plans give you the best discount on your committed hourly spend, but you pay On-Demand rates for anything above. If your peak is double your baseline, you might want to commit to your baseline and live with On-Demand overage. A strategic review with our team can help you right-size your commitment.
